Cease hypocrisy on the issue of Human Rights
The 62nd Session of the UN Commission on Human Rights will begin next March
20 in Geneva, coinciding with the broadcasting of new footage of US military torturing Iraqi prisoners.
The United States and its EU allies have successively prevented this Commission from condemning the massive and systematic violations of human rights promoted in the name of the so called war against terrorism.
The EU governments have refused to admit the testimonies and evidences submitted by citizens of their countries, who have been victims of several forms of torture at Guantánamo navy base. They have also allowed the flight of CIA aircrafts carrying prisoners to illegal detention centers in Europe and elsewhere.
We the undersigned call upon intellectuals, artists, social activists, and men and women of goodwill everywhere to join our claims: the Commission on Human Rights or the Council that will substitute it, must demand the immediate closing of the arbitrary detention centers created by the United States as well as the ceasing of all these deliberate violations of human dignity.

Opposition to US Prison in Guantanamo Grows
Havana, May 9, 2006. (Prensa Latina) Opposition to the US prison in the naval base of Guantanamo keeps on growing, with at least 10, 819 who have joined the call made by intellectuals and the civil society for closing such facilities.
People from all sectors are increasingly joining this call for the closure of Guantanamo and other torture centers, as well as for the end of the European Union-US complicity in the "flights of death" carrying opponents or suspects, according to the Network of Networks in Defense of Humankind, which sponsors the document released on Mar 14.
The text also demands that the EU should pay attention to denunciations of citizens who have been illegally tortured and interrogated by US experts.
Nine Nobel Prizewinners, including Jose Saramago, Wolle Soyinka, Nadine Gordimer, Dario Fo, Harold Pinter, Adolfo Perez Esquivel, Rigoberta Menchu Tum, Mairead Corrigan and Zhores Alfiorov, have signed the protest.
Bulgaria: Close Guantanamo Naval Base
Havana, Apr 27, 2006 (Prensa Latina) Bulgaria's anti-fascist daily Zharava made a front page a call to “End Hypocrisy in Human Rights”.
The Network of Networks in Defense of Humanity has been collecting signatures urging the closing of the US naval base in Guantanamo as well as other US torture centers.
So far over 9,000 Nobel Prizewinners, heads of state, artists, scientists, indigenous leaders, feminists, laymen and social organizations have signed. To join them, if you have not already done so, go to www.derechos-humanos.com.
The document also calls to end the US and European Union complicity with CIA "rendition flights" carrying terrorism suspects, dissidents or opponent of US government policy.
It also calls for the EU to pay attention to denouncements from nationals that have suffered torture, interrogation and prison and have been denied access to legal counsel.

Guatemalans against Guantanamo Jail
Guatemala, Apr 4, 2006. (Prensa Latina) Over 50 Guatemalan academics have joined so far the international call to demand United States to close the Guantanamo naval base in Cuba and other illegal detention centers in the world.
"I have always been against those foreign military bases and I think that in case of Guantanamo, there is no reason of having an enclave like that in an independent country," said physician Jose Barnoya, one of the signers of the document.
Barnoya, admirer of Cuba since he was a teenager, talked of the historic links between the two countries and Jose Marti´s presence in Guatemala, as well as termed inadmissible the US blockade on Cuba for over 40 years.
Alfonso Bauer, another Guatemalan academic, has also supported Cuba and demanded Washington to close Pentagon´s prison in its naval base in Guantanamo, a portion of Cuban territory illegally occupied against the will of the island nation.
The renowned lawyer was one of the first signers of the international call against the war in Iraq and US violations of human rights, a document signed by over 6,000 academics worldwide so far.

Argentine Academics Comdemn US Human Rights Policy
Buenos Aires, Mar 30, 2006 (Prensa Latina) Argentine academics urged their compatriots to endorse the international document "Cease Hypocrisy on the Issue of Human Rights."
Political scientist Atilio Boron, executive secretary of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences, presented a world call condemning US human rights policy at the Cultural Cooperation Center in Buenos Aires on Thursday.
More than 5,500 people including Nobel Prize laureates, cultural and political celebrities and representatives of social and human rights organizations have signed the text against the US hypocritical conduct, and 700 are from Argentina.
Boron cited the numerous flagrant violations the US government has committed, such as tortures of Iraqi prisoners in the Abu Ghraib prison and Guantanamo naval base.
He supported the demand to promptly shut down arbitrary US detention camps operating in the world and stop violations of human dignity.
Argentine intellectuals want their government to heed the document and change its vote at the UN to condemn any US resolution against Havana, said Boron.
His stance was repeated by writer and journalist Stella Callón, who called for participants to sign the document and raise their voices to say NO to the Empire´s wild race to dominate the world.
Leon Rozichner, a philosopher and teacher at the university, asserted the US mass media seeks to terrify audiences and neutralize their response.
